Library reopens after expansion, and familiar faces help smooth the way

A new children’s area has been added as part of the 4,000-square-foot expansion at the Lavenia McCoy Public Library in Bayfield. The library now is 50 percent larger.

The expansion at the Lavenia McCoy Public Library includes room for more books and a new community room. The library’s existing meeting room was in such demand, librarians were having to turn groups away.

Donnalee Baxstrom, left, who retired as director of the Lavenia McCoy Public Library earlier this month, and Interim Director Sherry Taber, enjoyed the switchover process. Baxstrom retired after 35 years in the position, and Taber brings experience she received during the design, construction and shake-down phase of the new Durango Public Library, which opened in 2008.
