Spring into this year’s racing season with the “Three Springs 10K for Books and Things,” sponsored by the Fort Lewis College Exercise Science Department.
In its third year, this event combines a variety of terrain from paved road to dirt road, open field, singletrack trails and finally, sidewalks.
According to race organizers Emily Houghton and Mary Ann Erickson, “The event is a student project in our administration class, so the students get the experience of organizing and executing a big event. All monies raised go to scholarships for exercise science students.”
Durango boasts many 5K and half-marathon events, but the 10K distance is a rare bird and a fun and challenging distance for those just beginning to ramp up their mileage and get in shape for the longer summer and fall events.
The race is happening at 10 a.m. Sunday in the Three Springs neighborhood. The course makes a figure eight as runners pass through the starting area at the halfway point, making it a spectator-friendly event.
After the race there will be an awards ceremony where the first-place man and woman each will receive a prize from Brown’s Sport Shoe, and a raffle will be held for all the other participants.
“We thought the event complements our department, an exercise event to raise money for the exercise science department,” said Houghton and Erickson.
Durangoan Gary Goold has run the race the past two years and has fond memories of running it.
“I like that it supports a scholarship program for the Fort Lewis College Exercise Science Department,” he said.
“I also like having a 10K available to run, and Three Springs continues to be a great place for a race. I would definitely recommend it to others. It is a fun, social, well-organized event.”
Erickson said that Nick Becker, who owns Anytime Fitness in Three Springs and is an FLC alumnus, provides the T-shirts for the event.
Other sponsors include Durango Joe’s, Maria’s Bookshop, Durango Sports Club, Colorado Clothing/True Colorado, The Chair Salon, Serious Texas Bar-B-Q, Cuckoo’s Chicken House and the FLC bookstore, with more arriving daily.
This event is the first of many for the 2015 racing season in Durango. The Durango Running Club hosts five major running events: the Narrow Gauge 10-mile and 5K-runs, Steamworks Half Marathon, the Thirsty 13 Half Marathon, Kennebec Challenge and the Turkey Trot, as well as supporting other local races.
Throughout the season, the club also has weekly group trail runs, road runs and speed workouts for all running levels and abilities.
Opportunities abound for training with others or just selecting a race and working toward a goal for the season.
Come on out to Three Springs this Sunday and get your dose of motivation for the upcoming racing season and enjoy the camaraderie of local runners while supporting a worthwhile cause.
Race-day registration is available at 9 a.m. at Three Springs near the outdoor amphitheater. For more information or to register, visit www.fortlewis.edu/exercise-science/10kInformation/Registration.aspx.
