Last week I was flying solo as my wife was out of town, so I decided to head over to Hunters Run in Oxford to play a round of golf.
I am remiss in telling you it has been over a decade since I last played this nine-hole layout. This course has matured tremendously over the years. This year’s abundance of moisture did not hurt the course, either.
I found myself leaving the driver in the bag half the time, opting to iron out my slice in some of the narrowing tee shots. Once I rounded the first nine, I became more familiar with the placement of shots on some of the blind approaches. The greens were true and uniform, and the only irritant was the ball marks not repaired and fairway divots not replaced from previous golfers. I spent time replacing and repairing fresh flaws so subsequent golfers could enjoy the course better.
Hillcrest Golf Club
Checking in on upcoming tournaments, we find the Durango Dermatology “Skins” Game and Progressive Best Ball on July 26 at Hillcrest Golf Club. There is $500 in added prize purse and a $35 entry fee per person with two chances to win. This is a four-person, choose-your-own-team event with tee-times beginning at 8 a.m. The progressive best-ball format is one best net ball on the first six holes, followed by the two best net balls on the second six holes. It continues with the three best net balls on the next five holes and all four net scores on the 18th. There is a special event on the 24th, so check with Hillcrest Golf Club head professional John Vickers about the details.
Then, July 27-28, the Hillcrest Junior Club Championship will be contested. There are bracketed tee times each day, so check with the pro shop to schedule your casual golfing experience around this event.
