Crank it up.
Durango DEVO rides again.
The Durango Junior Development Mountain Bike Team (DEVO for short) will cruise into its fifth season this year.
Registration for the popular junior mountain biking program is coming up next week.
Sign-ups for the DEVO Juniors for elementary school-age riders will be 5-7 p.m. March 2 at the Durango Community
Recreation Center. Registration for the U14 and U19 age groups will be 7-8:30 p.m. March 3, also at the rec center.
A host of new programs and an all-star lineup of coaches are ready for the junior mountain bikers and the new
The depth of experience we have in our coaches is extensive," DEVO director Sarah Tescher said this week, in a
Add the cycling background of the coaches, the board of directors and Tescher herself, and Durango DEVO features a
staggering 300 years of cycling experience.
The Durango DEVO board includes former Olympian Travis Brown of Durango.
The new girls U19 head coach is one of the most decorated mountain bike racers in history - Durango's Elke Brutsaert.
She has two X-Games medals to her credit along with World Cup downhill podium finishes.
But there's more, according to Tescher (another of the decorated former racing pros).
For example, six professional bike racers serve as the DEVO Junior coaches.
The coaches for the kindergarten-age bikers are Fort Lewis College cyclists, including a national downhill champion and
a cyclocross state champion.
Tescher said a number of guests will give special presentations to the DEVO groups. Ned Overend, Shonny Vanlandingham,Todd Wells, Chris Wherry and others meet with the DEVO riders regularly.
"It's like John Elway showing up at a football practice," Tescher said of the Hall-of-Fame cyclists who work with the
Durango DEVO riders.
We're fortunate to have that level of support," Tescher said.
New this year, she said, is a special bike-fitting program for the young riders. Experts in the field will assist the
DEVO cyclists in the proper fitting of bikes.
Also, she said, Durango DEVO is launching a Just Ride Club Team for young mountain bikers who want to ride but not
We're excited about the Just Ride Club," Tescher said, adding that the program further supports the organization's

She said the addition of Brutsaert is a real boost for Durango DEVO.
Having her on board is great. She adds so much to the program. For (the girls team), I can't think of anyone better,"
The older teams will compete in numerous races again this summer, including the Escalante Days Mountain bike Race in
Dolores, among others. They also will race in the Mountain States Cup Series.
Durango DEVO also hosts a number of special training camps, including the famed Top Secret Training Camp.
Trail etiquette and skill development are a standard part of the Durango DEVO program, Tescher said.
