We are so fortunate to have a cancer services center right here in La Plata County at Mercy Regional Medical Center. I know how cancer changed my young life when my mother succumbed to it when she was in her early 50s, and I was barely 16 years old at the time.
Back then, because of my age, the nurses had to sneak me into the hospital to be at my mother’s bedside in her last remaining seconds. This is an image I still relive. The battle continues to eradicate cancer and to give hope to those who are diagnosed. This is why Thursday, Sept. 24 is an important date as the Colors for Cancer-Autumn Golf Tournament will be played on the Glacier Club course north of Durango.
The Glacier Club has graciously opened its spectacular layout for this four-person team event to benefit Mercy Health Foundation/Mercy Cancer Services. There are several ways businesses and individuals can sponsor holes. Contact Kay Hoppe-Jones at 903-8493. You can get a team together with a foursome cost of $600, or $150 per player.
The tournament will have a shotgun start at noon, and there will be a 19th Hole Barbeque Buffet prepared by the Glacier Club’s culinary team. Prizes and awards will be featured at this end-of-round buffet. To register, go to the Mercy Health Foundation website: mhffnd.org/events.html or call 764-2800. You also need to check out the poster of the event – it is breathtaking.
Hillcrest Golf Club
Two days later, the Dave Peterson Memorial Tournament – 3 Clubs and a Putter – will take place at the Hillcrest Golf Club on Sept. 26. There is $500 in added prize purse and an entry fee of $40 per person. This is also the last opportunity to qualify for the Oct. 3 Todd Sieger Shootout-Coldwell Banker Heritage House Realtors event. Tee times for the event will begin at 9 a.m., and you can pick your own foursome. This is individual play-net only with 100 percent handicaps used for scoring. Five dollars from every entry fee will go to the Durango Cancer Center. Give Hillcrest a call at 247-1499 to get in on this event.
