On Feb. 27, I attended the Community Ideas Forum sponsored by La Plata-Archuleta Cattlemen's Association and
Sustainability Alliance of Southwest Colorado. I was impressed by the many volunteers who attended this event. These
dedicated people included residents and county staff who are dedicated to the future of growth in La Plata County.
The forum format was set up in work groups so people could participate in areas of interest. I would have liked to have
been part of all of these groups but chose to be part of the transportation group because of my experience with
transportation engineering and infrastructure. I was impressed with the diverse group of people who were very
well-informed and committed to the future growth of Southwest Colorado.
The facilitators who led our group were very knowledgeable with transportation issues and did a very good job keeping
the group focused. There were many good ideas and suggestions, which I would have never thought of, and I left the
meeting with a much better understanding of the community's ideas about where we need to go with reference to
It is my opinion: Volunteers are the heart and soul of the community. These volunteers came from all parts of the
county including the Durango Planning Commission, county staff, nonprofit organizations, landowners and other
interested parties. One gentleman in our group was a young man who had never attended such an event but had concerns of
where the county was headed with reference to growth.
I left the meeting with a positive feeling that we have committed volunteers who are not self-serving and who want to
make our community better for our future residents. Thank you to all of you who attended, and hopefully we will see
more of you in the future.
