As a lifelong, practicing Catholic and graduate of Catholic schools, I feel compelled to stand up and be counted on
this issue. In my humble opinion, we must pare away the dogma that has clouded the issue of homosexuality and refocus
on the Christ of Christianity.
Jesus deliberately and unwaveringly embraced marginalized and reviled members of the society of his time: the poor, women, ill and disabled people, tax collectors, nonbelievers and children, among others. Indeed, in one instance, he
rebuked his disciples specifically for turning children away: Let them come to me and do not prevent them; for the
kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these." - Mathew 19:13-15.
Shall we now be so bold as to add the qualifier, unless they be the children of a lesbian couple?" I say not. Instead, let us use this as an opportunity to teach our children about the true meaning of Christ's life and the compassion and
inclusiveness for which he stood.
