Someone stole packages from open-faced mailboxes that serve four subdivisions near Electra Lake last night, and it’s unlikely all the victims of the thefts have discovered and reported their property is missing.
“I’m sure we’re probably going to get more calls about packages getting taken,” said Sgt. Jeff Blevans with the La Plata County Sheriff’s Office.
Two victims, Kitty and Brian Benzar, said even though packages are often left in unlocked boxes, this is the first time they have been hit by mail theft.
“It’s all on the honor system,” Kitty Benzar said.
The two were expecting a tool in the mail, but even though they received notice it was delivered, they have not received it. Their neighbor had a similar experience, Benzar said.
Benzar also noticed cardboard boxes along the road, and she suspects the thief left empty boxes behind.
If someone knows anything about the crime, Benzar is hopeful they will come forward and report the thief.
“Some Grinch followed the UPS driver,” she said.
Mail theft is common in La Plata County, and Blevans advises residents to have mail delivered to their workplace or a place that will be attended when the mail arrives.
The local UPS office declined to comment on the thefts.
