The Music in the Mountains Festival Orchestra performed an original composition "Brighter Than the Flames," by David Sterrett, commissioned in honor of all emergency personnel who responded to the 416 Fire, which lasted from June 1 to July 9, 2018 in the area north of Durango, Colorado. The images in the video come from the work of Jerry McBride of the Durango Herald and from the fire fighters themselves from various agencies responding to the 416 Fire, especially the USFS fire crews and the NIMO team.
The Music in the Mountains Festival Orchestra performed this work five times during the Festival. The music in this video come from their performance on July 15, 2018 at Purgatory Resort. Guillermo Figueroa, Conductor. Gregory Hustis, Artistic Director.
The people of Durango made the signs that appear toward the end of this video.
The 416 Fire—so called because it was the 416th fire “dispatch” in the San Juan National Forest in 2018—burned over 54,120 acres. Well over 1,000 emergency workers were needed to control it. Hundreds of residents were evacuated from affected areas. In the end no lives were lost, nor were any homes or structures destroyed by the fire.
