Colorado State Patrol has an idea as to who may have struck a motorcyclist near Pagosa Springs last month, but the department is still trying to confirm other details that may link the alleged suspect to the crash.
The motorcyclist was allegedly struck by another vehicle on U.S. 160 about 10 miles west of Pagosa Springs on Aug. 23, for which that other vehicle fled. The motorcyclist was taken to the hospital with non-serious injuries.
CSP trooper Dan Selph said the department has identified a possible suspect, but he declined to provide further details out of concern the person may flee again.
“We know who the person is, and we’re working with other agencies,” he said.
Selph, who is investigating the incident, said the vehicle in question is a dark-colored four-door SUV, but he did not have any information about a license plate or a possible make and model coming from eyewitnesses at the time.
“The witnesses, no one even got a partial plate,” he said. “Any time a crime is committed, we have to tie someone to it with eyewitness testimony. It’s what we rely on very often, and this eyewitness testimony we have, none of it is tying to one single person. So, it’s kind of a shot in the dark.”
Selph said the motorcycle rider was cited for traffic violations following the crash, but he declined to provide additional details about why that person was cited because of the ongoing investigation.
Those who may have information about the crash or the alleged hit-and-run driver can call CSP’s Montrose dispatch line at 249-4392 at or the Archuleta County Sheriff’s Office at 264-8430.
