One dead in three-vehicle collision on U.S. Highway 160 near Hesperus

Road was closed for more than seven hours during investigation

A fatal crash on U.S. Highway 160 at milepost 73 near Hesperus closed the highway for seven hours Sunday.

Colorado State Patrol spokeswoman Sherri Mendez said the crash, which occurred at 9:17 a.m., was a head-on collision involving a Chevrolet Equinox, a Ford F-350 and a Toyota Tacoma.

The driver of the Chevrolet Equinox, a 69-year-old woman from Hesperus, died at the scene. La Plata County Coroner Jann Smith identified her as Michelle Hover.

The driver of the Ford-350, one of three people in the truck, was airlifted to Mercy Hospital with serious injuries. Passengers were taken by ambulance to the hospital.

Mendez could not provide details about how the crash happened.

The driver of the Toyota Tacoma, a 52-year-old man from Durango, was not injured.

Traffic was rerouted to County Road 125, and Highway 160 did not reopen until nearly 4:30 p.m.
