Bayfield woman struck by vehicle crossing U.S. Highway 550 north of Durango

Driver of truck swerved in attempt to avoid hitting pedestrian

A 25-year-old Bayfield woman was struck by a vehicle while attempting to cross U.S. Highway 550 north of Durango on Friday night.

According to Colorado State Patrol Trooper Gabriel Moltrer, a 40-year-old Durango man was driving a 2024 Chevrolet Silverado north on Highway 550 with a 10-year-old boy in the vehicle when a pedestrian attempted to cross the highway. The driver of the Silverado attempted to swerve to miss the pedestrian but could not do so in time.

CSP declined to released the name of the driver or the pedestrian because the incident remained under investigation as of Monday afternoon.

Both people in the vehicle were wearing seat belts and did not suffer injuries.

The woman who was struck was taken to Mercy Hospital with serious injuries. A spokeswoman for Mercy Hospital did not immediately respond to a request for comment Monday about the woman’s condition.

CSP declined to say whether alcohol is suspected or whether a blood-alcohol test had been administered to the driver, saying the case remained under investigation.

Law enforcement were unsure of the circumstances that led to the woman attempting to cross the highway and failing to yield to oncoming traffic.

The highway was closed for a while near mile marker 26 and had alternating during other parts of the crash investigation.
