A fire that ignited in Gustavo’s Mexican Restaurant and Bar, 125 E. Main St., on Thursday afternoon is under investigation, according to the Cortez Fire Protection District.
Firefighters were dispatched to Gustavo’s at 2:35 p.m., and travel was opened on Main Street again around 4:54 p.m. The scene was cleared at 5:16 p.m.
Cortez Fire Protection District Battalion Chief Cory Elliott told The Journal there were no injuries and that the fire started at the back of the restaurant, causing some damage to the bar and restaurant.
“It did some damage in the bar occupancy, and there's a small amount of smoke damage in the restaurant itself, which is next door,” Elliott said. “There was no damage into Brand Central, the big business to the west.”
Cortez firefighters also received aid from neighboring fire protection districts in Lewis-Arriola, Dolores and Mancos.
