Next week: Not to miss

David Tart

David Tart has worked as an animator in some of the biggest animation blockbusters in the history of humans — “Toy Story,” “A Bug’s Life,” “Monsters, Inc.,” “Robots,” “Finding Nemo” — and at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, he’ll be demonstrating some of his skills and sharing his experiences at the Durango Public Library.

Tart will demonstrate the process of creating an animated scene for a feature film, covering the various components that go into a finished piece such as story writing, dialogue, story boarding, modeling, rendering and animating.

He’ll also discuss the life of an animator, how the technical duties are divided and what it’s like being one of 300 to 400 animators working on a major feature film, a highly collaborative process, he said. He’ll also detail the duties of animators and address questions as to why animators only animate, instead of, say, actually creating characters.

Tart is the founder and director of Rocky Mountain Animation Labs in Durango, a school where students learn basic to advanced skills in 2D and 3D animation. His other teaching credits include Pixar University, The Art Institute and The University of New Mexico.

Tart said the presentation is for general audiences, “anyone who’s ever wondered what it’s like to work on a film like “Toy Story” or “Finding Nemo,” he said.
