Animas High School seniors who taught the community about homelessness and mental health through well-organized events graduated Friday, taking their real-world problem-solving skills with them.
“They have already had exposure to real-world questions and put out novel solutions,” said Principal Sean Woytek.
The 64 students also have stronger and more applicable math skills than past classes because Animas High revamped its math programs three years ago and eliminated segregating students by skill level.
Classes differentiated by math skill level inadvertently segregated students by socio-economic class, Woytek.
The new system eliminated that segregation and encouraged students who didn’t love math before high school to embrace it, he said.
