Demon girls can’t overcome early deficit

The Demons made more baskets Saturday than they did Friday, but it wasn’t enough.

Durango High School’s boys basketball team fell 64-46 to Loveland on Saturday afternoon in Parker in the third-place game of the Ponderosa High School tournament.

A night before, the Demons lost 37-26 to the tournament hosts.

“We’re just trying to find rhythm in our shots and get the ball in the bucket a bit more,” DHS head coach Alan Batiste said.

Saturday’s game was back-and-forth, and the Demons trailed 27-24 at halftime. DHS was able to take a one-point lead, but the Demons awoke the Indians, who promptly went on a 15-4 run to take a commanding lead.

Junior guard Terrence Trujillo led the Demons with 12 points.

The Ponderosa tournament provided the first three games of the season for the Demons, who began the season two weeks after the majority of Colorado schools.

“Overall, it was good we finally got our feet wet and got three games in,” Batiste said. “Now we have four games in six days next week. We’ll see how we do. This was a good experience, and we will be right back up here next week for another tournament in Pueblo.”
