The Durango girls wrestling team finished fourth out of 12 schools in the Western Slope Showdown Friday at Montrose and seventh out of nine schools in the Bloomfield Invitational on Saturday.
In the Western Slope Showdown, Brooke and Lillian Fenberg both won in their weight classes to help propel the Demons to a fourth-place finish.
Brooke Fenberg clinched the 120-pound division title, including a win against Olathe’s Sadie Corn in the championship match. Lillian Fenberg won the 130-pound division title, including a victory against Olathe’s Vicki Serna in the championship match.
Marie Baker also finished second in the 125-pound division, while Aleia Fenberg finished third in the 115-pound division.
Durango also tallied some strong results in the Bloomfield Invitational, as Baker won the 120-pound division title. Brooke Fenberg finished second in the 120-pound division, and Hana Maletich finished third in the same division.
“That tournament was a lot of fun and well worth going through Red Mountain pass and its weather is always fun,” Durango coach Kyle Hanson said. “Our challenge this year is that we've got a plethora of girls very close to the same weight. So, I think both days the thing that was fun was that we have a really competitive group of girls that are continuing to go back and forth, whether it's in the practice room, or whether it's in the finals.”
The Demons opened its season at Steamboat Springs, falling 4-1 on Friday and 1-0 on Saturday. The Demons started the season at 0-2.
Senior forward Henry Howe scored Durango’s lone goal in Friday’s matchup and was assisted by senior defender Zach Griswold. Junior goalie Luka Remnec had 11 saves for the Demons on Friday.
Junior goalie Evan Brock had 14 saves on Saturday.
