The Durango High School alpine ski team wrapped up its season on Friday with the state slalom championships at Copper Mountain and a couple of Demons finished near the top.

Sophomore Holden Bronson was DHS’ top finisher, placing 10th with a two-run time of 1 minute, 45.45 seconds. His first run was 54.00, but he lowered it by 2.55 seconds on his second run through the gates.

Junior Ian Fehr finished close behind in 12th place in 1:46.28, posting runs of 54.59 and 51.69.

Sophomore Dane Englund rounded out the DHS boys’ score, placing 22nd out of the 32 finishers in 1:58.75. Englund clocked runs of 1:01.17 and 57.58.

Two other Demon boys were right with their teammates, but were later disqualified: sophomore Zach Oliver and freshman Corbin Horrocks. Oliver initially placed 15th in 1:50.40 (56.10 and 54.30), while Horrocks initially placed 22nd in 1:57.20, clocking a 56.03 second run.

Out of the 66 boy participants, 32 either did not finish one of the runs or got disqualified while two did not start, including lots of Demons.

In the girls competition, 16 skiers did not finish, including three Demons.

Sophomore Lauren McClellan led the DHS girls in the slalom championships. McClellan clocked runs of 1:01.31 and 1:00.30 to place 24th out of 50 finishers in 2:01.61.

Senior Alaysia Cullum ended up placing 36th in 2:09.63 after runs of 1:06.60 and 1:03.03.

Senior Ava McClellan clocked a 1:00.37 first run, but did not finish her second run.

Several other Demons, however, did not finish their first runs on the tight course.

Junior Gracey Henning, who led DHS with a fifth-place finish in the state giant slalom championship on Thursday, did not finish. Neither did junior Annabel Carithers, senior Barrron Bronson, sophomore Finn Scarpella and senior Renic Vincent.

Colin Kagan of Steamboat Springs won the boys’ individual title in 1:33.16 while Emma McHaffle, also of Steamboat, won the girls’ slalom title in 1:45.74.

In the team races, which include both alpine and Nordic results, the Battle Mountain girls and Summit boys both defended their state team titles.

DHS, which only races alpine, placed 12th in the girls’ team chase and 11 in the boys.

The DHS girls, however, finished fourth in giant slalom and ninth in slalom while the boys placed fourth in giant slalom and fifth in slalom.
