DHS wraps state with batons

Ashlyn Nolan of Discovery Canyon grounded her competition in the girls 100-meter hurdles Saturday in Lakewood with a victory at the CHSAA Class 4A Track and Field State Championships. Abi Grace McGee from Montrose finished fourth, Rebecca Harris from Sand Creek finished second and Hanna Felice from Falcon finished fifth.

Durango High School closed the 2014 Colorado High School Activities Association Class 4A Track and Field State Championships in 17th place on the girls side and 21st place on the boys side.

The girls team had 20 points, while champion Niwot had 66 on Saturday over three days of competition at Jefferson County Stadium in Lakewood.

Palmer Ridge won the boys title with 103 points, and the Demons had 15.

Justin Marcum finished 10th in the boys pole vault with a season-best jump of 13 feet, 3 inches before participating in two relay finals.

“His height was the same as the sixth-place finisher, but he had a few more misses,” DHS head coach David McMillan said.

Joe Crawford took 17th in the boys 1,600-meter run in 4 minutes, 35.9 seconds.

The Demons’ boys 4x100-meter relay team finished ninth in the finals in 43.51 seconds, and the Demons’ girls 4x400-meter relay finished seventh in the finals at 3:58.99.

“We stepped it up – just missed a school record by three-tenths (of a second),” McMillan said.

The Demons’ boys 4x400-meter relay took sixth in the 4A finals in 3:21.93.

“We took off seven seconds progressively in the last three times we ran it,” McMillan said. “Coming down the finish, it was a straight line of bodies, and anyone could have got it.”
