A well-rounded offensive attack is exactly what the Durango Demons wanted before beginning league games.
The Durango High School girls basketball team wrapped up its non-league schedule with a home game against Farmington’s Piedra Vista High School on Friday night. It was a make-up game from Tuesday, when heavy snow in Durango forced a postponement.
The extra time allowed the Demons (10-1) to continue to clean up their game after the holiday break, and the Demons cruised to a 49-34 victory.
“We played much better than we have this whole past week. We clicked a bit better,” DHS head coach Tim Fitzpatrick said. “More people scored, which is huge for us.”
DHS was led in scoring by sophomore guard Katrina Chandler, who finished with 14 points. Senior guard Katie Wiegert added 12 points.
Danica Dudley and Taylor Edwards each scored six points for DHS, and Stephanie Bayse added four.
“Those are all big points for us coming from the paint,” Fitzpatrick said.
DHS held the Lady Panthers (8-7) to only three points in the first quarter.
“We played some pretty intense defense at the beginning of the game,” Fitzpatrick said.
The Demons will begin Southwestern League action at 5:30 p.m. Friday at home against Grand Junction.
“The girls are excited about their performance, and that’s a good thing going into league on a positive note,” Fitzpatrick said. “We know our league is gonna be tough. We open with Junction, and that’s a very good basketball team. We have to improve this week coming into practice and see what we can do.”
