The Durango High School girls and boys basketball teams traveled to Montrose on Saturday to complete their first round of 4A/5A Southwestern League games.
The Durango girls started the day with a 42-28 victory over MHS.
DHS head coach Tim Fitzpatrick said the team played solid defense, had a good rebounding effort, and the bench played really well in the win.
Mason Rowland scored 28 points to lead DHS’ offense. Riley Campbell added four points while Katelynn Sheppard and Carter Neiman both scored three.
With the win, Durango improved to 12-5 overall and 2-2 in the league where DHS is currently third behind Fruita Monument (14-2, 3-0) and Grand Junction Central (15-1, 3-0), but ahead of Montrose (9-9, 1-3) and Grand Junction (1-17, 0-4).
In the boys’ game, league-leading Montrose limited DHS to five points in the first quarter, four in the third and took the win, 66-35.
Walter Stauffer led DHS with 13 points and 13 rebounds. Anthony Flint scored eight, Dylan Bettin added seven and Jasper Zastrocky chipped in five.
DHS slipped to 7-10, 1-3 with the loss while Montrose remained undefeated at 17-0, 4-0.
Next, Durango’s boys and girls will play at Grand Junction on Friday.
