All Durango School District 9-R schools within city limits implemented security protocols Thursday after a report of an armed man at a Starbucks on north Main Avenue.
The man had a warrant for his arrest, and Durango police were initially unable to locate the suspect. Out of an abundance of caution, the school district enacted safety measures, said Karla Sluis, spokeswoman for the district.
Schools were secured from external threats about 2 p.m., meaning doors were locked and no one was allowed in or out, Sluis said. Classes went on as normal, she said.
The suspect was detained about 2:20 p.m., and no weapon was found. He was carrying pieces of metal and plastic on him that may have been mistaken for a weapon, according to a DPD news release posted Thursday evening.
The security protocols were lifted shortly thereafter.
No additional information was available as of Thursday evening.
