Durango varsity hockey sweeps Telluride

Demons beat Miners 5-1 and 5-1

The Durango varsity high school hockey team traveled to Telluride this weekend for a two-game series against the Miners. Durango won both games by a 5-1 margin.

Freshman goalie Evan Brock was between the pipes and earned a .949 save percentage for the weekend.

In the first game, Durango took an early 1-0 lead with an unassisted goal by junior Zak Wentworth just five minutes into the first period. Telluride would answer back and tie the contest with their only goal of the game with 4:54 left in the first period.

The game-winning goal, scored by senior Bode Ensign and assisted by senior Cole Matava, came late in the second period. After that, the Demons would score three more times in the third period with Wentworth, Howe and Ensign all scoring with assists from Ensign, Matava and Luk Petranek for a 5-1 win over the Miners.

In the second game, Telluride came out strong and scored early in the first period. Wentworth would again score first for the Demons with .32 seconds left in the first period, tying the game 1-1.

Sophomore Eli Holden would score the game-winning goal, assisted by senior Cristoff Hollowell, seven minutes into the second period. Sophomores Howe and Holden would go on to score three more goals in the third period with assists from Wentworth and Ensign to help Durango defeat Telluride 5-1 a second time over the weekend.

The Demons will next host the New Mexico Cougars for a doubleheader on Saturday. The games are scheduled for 12:15 and 6:45 p.m.

Durango will also recognize its five graduating seniors between the second and third periods of the night game.
