The Durango sixth grade football team picked up a great win last weekend to give Aztec its first loss of the season, 6-0 .
Rea LaRacco tipped an Aztec pass, and Chase Swenk intercepted it. Jonah Dobson also intercepted a pass. Brekan Romero, Mauricio Alvarez, Cole Perkins, Chase Swenk, Keyon Alston, Isaiah Contreras and Sheridan Morris – who recovered a fumble – played well on defense to prevent Aztec from scoring. On offense, Keyon Alston caught a 40-yard pass thrown from Cole Perkins. Juan Sandoval Trujillo and Chase Swenk also caught passes. Cole Perkins, Brekan Romero and Rea LaRacco ran the ball multiple times, gaining yards and first downs.
Wyler Stewart came up big at the end, intercepting a pass with two minutes remaining, then rushing into the end zone for a touchdown.
The previous week, the sixth graders beat Bayfield 34-6 in Bayfield.
The Durango fifth-grade team shut out the Farmington Renegades, 10-0, after beating Kirtland 50-0 the previous week. Colton Winn made a key interception while Emmett Sorenson had a safety. Ely Pinto, Gavin Martinez, Levi Schwettman and Carter Kerlin came up with sacks. Greyson Ochocki scored Durango’s touchdown on a 45-yard run, and Carter Kerlin kicked the two-point conversion.
The fifth graders will play their final regular season game Saturday at Bloomfield.
The Durango fourth grade team improved to 5-0 with a 19-9 win over the Farmington Wolfpack. Tobias Romero had a huge game with 11 tackles, 89 yards rushing and a 45-yard touchdown run. Sawyer Sigle threw two 30-yard touchdown passes to Jameson Green. On defense, Colt Bartel made seven tackles, including three sacks, Jay Paulek made eight tackles and Carter Lopez made five. Cane Tucson also intercepted a pass and had a 34-yard run to help the team win.
The second grade Demons had a defensive battle with the Farmington Grizzlies. Charles Alston and Ryland Lopez had several good runs, but the Grizzlies kept them out of the end zone. A.J. Peterson, Connor Perkins, Conner Vagneur, Trenton Pinto and Jace Schwettman led the defense with some hard hits. The team will play its last home game at 9 a.m. Saturday against Kirtland.
The Durango third grade team suffered a heartbreaking loss. The team’s defense got multiple sacks from Kawika Walkerheld while Christopher Abbott and Darren Brunson made some big tackles to hold the Farmington Force to 6 points, but its offense was unable to match the Force. The third graders will next play the Aztec Outlaws at 9 a.m. Saturday in Aztec.
