Parents must attend the mandatory Parent Orientation Nights from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.: Ninth grade on Aug. 6; 10th grade on Aug. 8; 11th grade on Aug. 13; and 12th grade on Aug. 15. Parents should bring their son or daughter. Participants will have an opportunity to meet AHS faculty and staff members; learn about the College Counseling Department and curriculum; review AHS policies and procedures; and more. If more than one student will attend AHS, parents should try to attend each appropriate event as some information will be grade-specific.
Durango High Noon Rotary awards scholarships
Durango High Noon Rotary Club announces it has presented local students with scholarships totaling $10,500 for the upcoming school year.
These students were awarded $1,000 scholarships: Ansel Schiavone, Emilee Bergl, Anna Chambers, Kaitlin Barela, Nathan Goddard and Emily Sandner.
Brandon Little was awarded the Vocational Studies Scholarship of $1,500.
These students were awarded $1,500 for the High School Interact Scholarship: Erin Neale and Daniel Cummings.
Durango’s Alec Walecki named to dean’s list
Durango resident Alec Walecki, a Northeastern University student majoring in international affairs/economics, was recently named to the university’s dean’s list for the spring semester, which ended in April 2013.
To achieve the dean’s list distinction, Northeastern students must carry a full program of at least four courses, have a grade-point average of 3.5 or greater and carry no single grade lower than a C- during the course of their college career. Each student receives a letter of commendation and congratulation from his or her college dean.
In addition to the dean’s list, Walecki is a member of the University Honors Program, which offers students the chance to further hone their studies and interests, live in special-interest, on-campus housing and participate in one or two honors courses each term. Invitation into the honors program is highly competitive and students must maintain a high GPA and strong commitment to campus leadership to remain a part.

San Juan College offers scholarships
4 Corners Employer Education Services has established two scholarships for students seeking a degree or certificate from San Juan College.
Each applicant must complete and submit a scholarship application and meet the general eligibility requirements.
Applications can be picked up at San Juan College in the Financial Aid Office or the Quality Improvement and Career Center (Room 1715) – West Classroom Building.
Top candidates will be contacted for a personal interview with the Scholarship Committee.

Megan Lane of Durango named to dean’s list
Megan Lane of Durango was named to the spring 2013 dean’s list at Creighton University in Omaha, Neb.
Full-time students who rank in the top 10 percent of their class for the semester and earn a 3.5 grade-point average or better on a 4.0 scale are eligible for the dean’s list.
Gateway to College offers a second chance
The Gateway to College program at Southwest Colorado Community College gives a second chance to students who are between the ages of 17 and 20 and have fallen out of the traditional high school system.
It provides an alternative opportunity for them to get their high school diploma while simultaneously earning college credits toward an associate degree or certificate. Students get the support they need in a college atmosphere while progressing at their own level.

Blake Poplin graduates from Colorado College
Blake Poplin graduated with a degree in English from Colorado College in Colorado Springs.
Poplin is the son of Tiffany McCullough of Durango.

Veronica Kinoshita chosen for program
Veronica Kinoshita has been chosen to represent the Alabama School of Mathematics and Science at the 2013 session of American Legion Auxiliary Alabama Girls State, which will be held on the campus of The University of Alabama.
For one week, she will become a citizen in an imaginary state, taking part in the political life of her community, primarily through campaigning for and electing city, county and state offices. She will learn the operation of government by participating in party caucuses and through the election process. She plans to campaign for the office of lieutentant governor of Alabama Girls State.
Kinoshita will speak to her sponsoring organization, Alabama School of Mathematics and Science, and to other organizations upon invitation, about her experiences at American Legion Auxiliary Alabama Girls State.
Kinoshita is daughter of Bobbie and Ray Zakary of Mentone, Ala., and the granddaughter of Sue and Frank Houser of Palmer, Alaska, and Lih and Gil Knoshita of Durango.
Cortez Cultural Center offers camps for ages 9-12
Cortez Cultural Center’s Creative Camps continue Monday through June 28 for students ages 9-12.
