Students in one of the “small learning communities” at Durango High School have scheduled their third annual Empty Bowls meal – soup and bread – from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday in the school cafeteria.
Empty Bowls is a national program that promotes the fight against hunger and food insecurity. The organization marks its 25th anniversary this year.
In Durango, the public is invited to buy a bowl of soup and bread for $5, which will be donated to a charitable organization of the students’ choice. The students, who make and fire the bowls in a kiln at the high school, will have extra bowls for sale at $5.
McDonald’s, Bread and north City Market are sponsoring this year’s Empty Bowl.
The sponsoring students are enrolled in the International Baccalaurete approach to education, one of the small learning communities at DHS. International Baccalaureate emphasizes intercultural awareness, languages and community service.
Students at Escalante Middle School held their first Empty Bowls meal five years ago. For the past two years, they have donated proceeds, about $2,000 annually, to the Durango Food Bank. Escalante students’ event occurs in fall.
A portion of the $2,000 derives from a silent auction of bowls donated by professional potters.
