FLC roundup: Volleyball wins big home game, men’s soccer loses big on road

The final box score from Friday night’s match between Fort Lewis volleyball and Regis volleyball even surprised Skyhawks volleyball head coach Giedre Tarnauskaite.

FLC had its best-hitting day of the season and possibly Tarnauskaite’s stint as head coach against Regis. The Skyhawks hit 0.311 as a team and sophomore Alina Nunez had 22 kills as FLC beat Regis 3-1 at home.

After the 25-21, 17-25, 25-19, 25-18 win, FLC improved to 8-12 overall and 4-6 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play. Regis fell to 10-9 overall and 6-3 in the RMAC with the loss.

“On Wednesday, we went to practice; I reiterated and reminded the players that we are fighters and that we've been relentless,” Tarnauskaite said. “We just needed to be reminded of our standards and how we needed to execute. Yeah, and that's what our focus won. And we just had a very quick turnaround … Everybody had accountability, we picked up the intensity even more and the team really responded well. I'm glad that they put it together against Regis. They're a very tough team. In the four years that I've been here, we never beat Regis. So this is definitely, for me, a career big thing.”

Along with Nunez, sophomore Jordan DeJesus had 12 kills and junior Ella Butler had 11 kills. Senior setter Natalia Lambos had 55 assists.

Tarnauskaite was proud of Nunez reaching her potential by executing at the highest level. After four years together, Tarnauskaite said Lambos can almost read her mind and knows how Tarnauskaite wants her to play. She spread the ball out well and that led to FLC having a great hitting percentage.

FLC played against UCCS on Saturday night but results weren’t available before press time.

Men’s soccer suffers bad road loss to Colorado School of Mines 3-0

This season, the FLC men’s soccer team could rely on its offense to bail out some mediocre defensive performances. Until Thursday night.

Colorado School of Mines found the back of the net three times at home in the first 47 minutes and cruised to a 3-0 win over the Skyhawks.

FLC fell to 7-2-5 overall and 3-2-1 in the RMAC with its first shutout loss of the season. The Orediggers improved to 4-9-2 overall and 3-2-2 in RMAC play with the win.

The Skyhawks actually outshot Colorado School of Mines 17-16 but the Orediggers had more shots on goal 9-4. FLC had 18 fouls compared to only eight for Colorado School of Mines.

FLC fell into a hole early when Colorado School of Mines’ John Burnett scored in the ninth minute. Ayman Bushara scored in the 26th minute to put the Orediggers up 2-0 before Raul Gerhardus made it 3-0 in the 46th minute.

Next up for the Skyhawks is a road game against MSU Denver at noon on Sunday.
