The Fort Lewis Mesa Fire Protection District will hold elections for its board of directors on May 6.

Headquartered in Hesperus and staffed primarily by volunteers, the fire district is responsible for 2,093 homes in the western region of La Plata County, covering the communities of Hesperus, Red Mesa, Breen, Kline and Marvel.

A five-person board of directors manages the fire district’s finances. The board develops the annual budget and hires the district’s fire chief, said Jeannine Glasby, district office manager.

The six candidates ‒ Emily Horvath, Travis Schmitt, Garrett Vogel, Doug Wood, Ryan Quinn and Debbie Lee ‒ are running for three open seats. Elected members will serve four-year terms.

Debbie Lee, the current president of the board of directors, is the only returning board member seeking reelection.

Voting will be held at Station 1, 164 County Road 130, and polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Eligible electors must be registered to vote in Colorado and must live or own taxable property within the district boundary.

A “Meet the Candidates” event will be held from 5 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the Breen Community Building.
