General Motors has recognized Morehart Murphy Regional Auto Center, 730 South Camino del Rio, for 50 continuous years of operating a Chevrolet dealership in Durango.

In April 1968, while Jim Morehart was a senior at University of Colorado in Boulder, his father, Ed, became gravely ill. Jim dropped out of college to come home to run the family business. His father died in May that year. Jim completed his education at Fort Lewis College while running the dealership and raising a new family.

Pat Murphy Motors and Morehart Chevrolet Subaru merged on Jan. 1, 2009. The new combined dealership became known as Morehart Murphy Regional Auto Center.

“One of the great things about owning a business for 50 years is the amazing longtime employees past and present who have helped us grow,” Morehart said. “Our loyal customers love seeing all those familiar faces when they come in.”
