This month, we celebrate Animal Care & Control Appreciation Week (April 13-19), a time to recognize the dedicated professionals who protect animals and promote public safety in our communities. Here in La Plata County, we proudly honor the five Animal Protection officers of the La Plata County Humane Society – compassionate, dedicated people who work 365 days a year to make life better for pets and people alike.
From rescuing strays to investigating neglect and abuse, Animal Protection officers are often the first responders when a pet is in danger. They enforce local and state animal welfare laws, respond to calls for assistance, educate the public and help reunite lost pets with their families. So far this year, our local officers have responded to more than 200 calls; including 21 about vicious dogs, 27 citizens requesting help and 64 dogs off leash.
According to City Code 4.41: “Except in areas officially designated for off leash activities, it shall be unlawful for any owner, possessor or authorized agent of any owner to fail to restrain a dog by physical means from running at large.”
Luckily, we have a beautiful dog park with more than 23 acres of leash-free space right next to U.S. Highway 160. Please note that aggressive dogs are not permitted at the dog park and owners are legally responsible for any and all injury or destruction of property caused by their dog. For more information about leash-free areas in our community, check out https://tinyurl.com/2999wxxs.
If you witness an animal in distress or suspect abuse or neglect, the LPCHS Animal Protection team is here to help you. Please call 385-2900 or contact the La Plata County Humane Society. Remember to take a moment to say thank you to the next Animal Protection officer you see. They are caring for our county’s most vulnerable animals.
To our LPCHS Animal Protection officers: Thank you for your service, your compassion and your unwavering commitment to animal welfare. You are making our pets and our community safer every day, and we appreciate all you do!
