A house was destroyed by fire Thursday in the Cherry Creek subdivision area west of Hesperus.
The fire at 3421 U.S. Highway 160 started shortly after noon and completely engulfed a single-story log home, said Lenore Kremen, a part-time resident who lives east of the house.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Two occupants of the home were away at the time of the fire, but one woman was at home as the fire gained momentum, Kremen said.
“They’re safe; the mother’s safe, but the house is totaled,” Kremen said.
When firefighters arrived, the house was fully engulfed, she said, but firefighters quickly knocked down the flames and prevented it from spreading. Kremen said her husband was checking the mail when he saw smoke pouring from a window of the neighboring house.
