Ignacio Elementary bakers share their bounty

Explorers Club offers variety of activities to gifted, talented

Ignacio Elementary School’s Explorers Club students got a crash course in baking bread and shared the fruit of their labors with the diners at the Ignacio Senior Center last week.

In addition to providing the bread, the students ate lunch with the seniors and brought along some books to entertain their hosts.

The baking project was sponsored by King Arthur Flour’s Bake for Good: Kids Learn, Bake, Share Program, which teaches students how to bake bread from scratch and give it to their community, said Alison deKay, who helps sponsor Deb Meunier with the club. The Ignacio students joined more than 275,000 students in fourth through seventh grade who have taken part in the program since it began in 1992.

The company sends schools complete kits for each participating student that include bags of King Arthur’s all-purpose and whole wheat flours, a recipe book, yeast and a dough scraper. The kit is enough to bake two loaves, with a bag included to return one loaf to school to be given away.

It was just one of many projects the Explorers Club, which was created for the school’s gifted and talented students, has undertaken recently, deKay said.

“A few other projects we’ve done in the past include science and social studies research,” she said, “drama and improvisation, chess tournaments, arts and crafts and field trips such as fishing, glass blowing and 3-D printing. Essentially, we try to offer a wide variety of enrichment activities to spark their interest in learning.”
