Ignacio pawn shop opens second location in Durango

KP Pawn is third pawn shop in the city
Travis Kirkpatrick, left, recently opened KP Pawn and Sales at 644 E. College Drive in Durango. The owner, who has a shop in Ignacio, wanted to expand, and when he realized many of his customers were coming from Durango, he decided to find a location in the city.

KP Pawn and Sales has opened a second location in Durango at 644 E. College Drive.

The pawn shop has been operating at its Ignacio location for five years, but a saturated market led the owner to look for expansion.

“It was time for us to expand and try a second store,” owner Travis Kirkpatrick said.

He decided to come to Durango after several customers traveled from Durango to the Ignacio location looking for loans. The company started keeping an eye out for a location in the city about a year ago, and found one at the former location of The Fallen Angel, which had moved to 801 1/2 B Main Ave.

KP Pawn and Sales becomes the third pawn shop in the city of Durango, joining Colorado Trading and Rocky Mountain Pawn and Gun.

Kirkpatrick was drawn to the building because it had been home to a pawn shop nearly 20 years prior.

“The space is already set up for it,” Kirkpatrick said. “It already has a different area for the pawn room.”

Anticipating the move, KP Pawn and Sales introduced e-bikes to its inventory.

“We just picked them up this year,” Kirkpatrick said. “We knew we were going to get them when this location opened up.

“There won’t be a huge market for them in Ignacio.”

Kirkpatrick hopes the e-bikes will go along nicely with the rest of the items the store has in stock, including reconditioned Makita tools.

“One of the things we’re really trying to make this store is to just be where an adult can remember how to be a kid again,” Kirkpatrick said.
