Lanning leads small BHS girls team in Aztec

Barnes' throws support junior's four wins

Sometime in her distant track-and-field history, perhaps prior to her initial matriculation at Cripple Creek-Victor High School, folks may have still said to expect the unexpected out of one Jordan Lanning.

Now a junior at Bayfield High School, those days are already long gone. If Lanning wins one or more events at the approaching CHSAA Class 3A State Championships (May 17-19), it will surprise absolutely nobody.

Enjoying two days of interstate competition at the April 20-21 B&B Aztec Invitational, the Wolverine standout was again at her dominating best, winning the 100- and 300-meter hurdle (times of 16.03 and 47.89 seconds, respectively) sprints, the triple jump (34'2") and the high jump (5'5.5") inside Fred Cook Memorial Stadium.

Earning seven team points per victory, Lanning was directly responsible for 28 of BHS' 37 team points when all was said and done. Fellow junior Mikayla Barnes scored well in the throws, earning the other nine team points by placing second in the shot put with a 34-foot, 4.25-inch best, which trailed only 5A Bloomfield's Connie Viramontes, and by just 1.5 inches. Barnes also third in the discus with a peak 109'2" toss.

With 71.5 points, 5A Kirtland Central earned the team title.

On the track, Bayfield's Mylee Sanders finished 16th in the 200m dash (29.41) prelims and Mary Grayson tied for 17th (13.97) after those of the 100. Unable to record a mark in the shot, Tiarra Christensen managed to take 11th in the discus (95'10"), and Hannah Whitmer finished 13th in the long jump (14'0").

Seventh place overall at the B&B, the Wolverines will next travel to Saturday's Montrose Invitational, with some athletes traveling instead to that day's High Altitude Invite in Alamosa.
