Tax exemption available to some senior citizens

A property tax exemption may be available for tax year 2014 for qualifying senior citizens, the surviving spouses of seniors who previously qualified and for disabled veterans.

For people who qualify, 50 percent of the first $200,000 of the actual value of their primary residence is exempt. The state pays the tax on the portion that is exempt from property tax if monies are available. Senior citizens and disabled veterans already receiving the Property Tax Exemption need not reapply.

Taxpayers can verify if they are already signed up for the exemption or to receive an application or brochure by calling the La Plata County Assessor’s Office at 382-6228.

The application deadline for the senior exemption is July 15. Disabled veterans should contact the Colorado Division of Veterans Affairs for an application. The application deadline for disabled veterans is July 1, and applicants should contact the Division of Veterans Affairs.

Part of County Road 330 to be closed

A 150-foot section in the 2800 block of County Road 330 will be closed to through traffic Wednesday and Thursday for a culvert replacement.

The location of the culvert replacement is seven-tenths of a mile north of the southern intersection of County Road 330 and Colorado Highway 151 and 1.2 miles south from County Road 331.

Drivers are advised to use these alternate routes:

Northbound traffic to the 2800 block of County Road 330, use the southern intersection of County Road 330 and Colorado Highway 151.

Southbound traffic to the 2800 block of County Road 330, use County Road 330 east from Colorado Highway 151 or use County Road 331 from Archuleta County Road 988.

Road construction continues in Oxford

Road construction continues in the area commonly called Oxford, at the intersection of Colorado Highway 172 and County Roads 311 and 513. From Wednesday through April 25, installation of culvert pipes under Colorado Highway 172 will take place.

Traffic will be reduced to one lane while work is in progress. Delays of up to 15 minutes should be anticipated. No delays are anticipated between the hours of 7 and 9 a.m. Drivers are encouraged to allow extra travel time and to drive with caution. This project is expected to extend through November of 2014 and will reconstruct the “Oxford intersection:” adding acceleration and deceleration lanes on Colorado Highway 172, realigning County Road 311 with County Road 513 to the north, and will include numerous improvements to drainage and irrigation.

Audubon to host local bird walk Wednesday

A bird walk will be hosted by Weminuche Audubon Society at 9 a.m. Wednesday at For the Birds, 1560 East Second Ave.

The walks last about one hour and 15 minutes. Bring binoculars. The walks are free, but donations to the hosting group are welcome.
