A man found unconscious on the floor of his Vallecito home died Monday at Mercy Regional Medical Center.
Law enforcement does not suspect foul play in the death of 55-year-old Roland M. Earp III, who was found by his common-law wife around 6:15 p.m. with a gunshot wound.
La Plata County Coroner Jann Smith said Earp’s death is a suspected suicide.
Emergency medical technicians airlifted Earp to Mercy, Smith said. Medical professionals performed CPR on Earp, and he regained consciousness for a moment at the hospital before he was pronounced dead.
The La Plata County Sheriff’s Office found a handgun under the man’s body but declined to identify the make and model of the firearm.
Earp has family around La Plata County and “he has been in the area a while,” said Sgt. Chris Burke, spokesman for the Sheriff’s Office. The Coroner’s Office plans an autopsy sometime this week.
