Ben Nighthorse Campbell – Korean War veteran, Olympic athlete, jewelry designer and former Colorado politician – and his wife, Linda Campbell, celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary on Monday. The couple lives on their ranch near Ignacio.
Linda Campbell and Ben Nighthorse Campbell met in the spring of 1966 when Linda took a self-defense course that Ben was teaching, and they started to date soon after. After three months of dating, Ben told Linda: “Go call your dad and tell him we’re going to get married.” And they did.
Life together since then has been a series of “they did” milestones. They’ve achieved much together in their marriage: A trophy-winning judo team, a thriving horse ranch, an influential political career, a respected educational career, a flourishing jewelry line, two successful children and four delightful grandchildren.
How did they do it? With a “stick to it” attitude – ready to do what it takes to make things better and working, hand-in-glove, toward that end. They have clearly gotten it right because they celebrated their 52nd anniversary on Monday and, once again, said: “Yeah, we did that.”
