Bayfield Middle School teacher Christy Muir is recovering from brain surgery, and a family friend took it upon herself to assist with the medical costs as Muir recovers.

The family friend, Abby Clymer, organized a pancake fundraiser, which will take place from 8 to 11 a.m. Saturday at Bayfield High School. Cash donations of $20 during the fundraiser will be accepted.

“Wonderful family. They are constantly going above and beyond. … Truly just some of the best people you’ll ever meet,” Clymer said. “I just want to do something to give back.”

Muir, who teaches seventh and eighth grade language arts at BMS, suffered a sudden seizure on Sept. 30 and was hospitalized in Durango. That’s where two masses were found on both sides of her brain, according to a GoFundMe page.

“My heart dropped,” Clymer recalled. “We love the Muir family. … I know bad things happen to good people all the time, but that one hit really close to home.”

She was flown to a hospital in Colorado Springs before transferring to Barrow Neurological Institute in Scottsdale, Arizona. Muir underwent brain surgery on Oct. 10, the GoFundMe page said.

On Oct. 15, Muir posted an update on the GoFundMe page saying that she’s making steady progress in her recovery and was preparing to start physical therapy.

As of Thursday evening, the GoFundMe page has raised $11,298 of its $20,000 goal.

For the fundraiser, 100% of the proceeds will go toward paying for Muir’s medical bills and will allow her husband, Upper Pine River Fire Protection District Capt. Mike Muir, to take some time off from work, according to Clymer.
