Orio’s Roadhouse, one of last exceptions to Colorado’s smoking ban, to go smoke-free

Orio’s Roadhouse marked the end of an era Tuesday night when customers came together for one last smoke-filled hurrah before the Durango saloon went smoke-free.

For years, the Roadhouse was a haven for locals and passersby – a refuge for people who wanted to sip a beer, shoot pool and catch up with friends, all while puffing a cigarette.

The Roadhouse was one of the last exceptions to Colorado’s 2006 Clean Indoor Act, which banned indoor smoking at most establishments, including restaurants and bars. The Roadhouse was able to prove it generated at least 5% of its revenue in tobacco sales, which allowed it to operate as a “cigar-tobacco bar.”

After 18 years, Roadhouse owners Rob and Heidi Orio decided to stub out smoking.

“There are many factors that have gone into the discussion to go nonsmoking,” Heidi told The Durango Herald. “We just feel its time now to do so.”

As the final moments of smoke-filled revelry drew near, patrons buzzed with a melancholic acceptance. Some mourned the loss of a cherished pastime, while others applauded the owners for their commitment to creating a more welcoming environment for all.

The Roadhouse may be bidding farewell to indoor smoking, but its rough edges and anti-establishment spirit endures.
