On March 1, hikers contacted police after they found a backpack with her belongings on the Colorado Trail, about 2 miles from the Junction Creek parking lot on the trail.

The official report was filed about 5 p.m. after Durango police informed Chavez’s family of the discovery and they requested that she be reported as a missing person.

Because Chavez is suspected of going missing outside city limits, Durango Police Department Cmdr. Nick Stasis said the La Plata County Sheriff's Office has taken over the case and will handle further investigation.

The Durango Police Department said search and rescue dogs have been unable to locate her scent.

Anyone with information regarding Chavez’s disappearance or possible whereabouts should call the Durango Police Department at (970) 385-2900.
