Public meeting for College and Eighth Safety Project to be held Monday

Join city staff members at a virtual public meeting for the College and Eighth Safety Project from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at www.Durangogov.org/Zoom.

A brief presentation from staff members will explain key aspects of the current design plans and will be followed by open conversation with community members.

The project is located along College Drive from East Third Avenue to East Eighth Avenue, and along East Eighth Avenue from Second Street to College Drive.

It will improve accessibility and safety, especially for Durango’s most vulnerable road users, by reducing the lane configuration of College Drive and East Eighth Avenue from four lanes to three to reduce traffic speeds, create more space for other road users, reduce lanes of traffic for pedestrians to cross and help reduce crashes.

Three transit stops and surrounding sidewalks will be improved to meet Americans with Disabilities accessibility standards. A missing link in a sidewalk on the 200 block of East Eighth Avenue will be installed. Bike lanes will be upgraded.

The city of Durango was awarded a $779,877 Highway Safety Improvement Program grant and a $300,000 Colorado Department of Transportation FASTER grant for the project.

These safety and accessibility improvements are identified in the city’s Multimodal Transportation Plan and were made a priority by the Multimodal Advisory Board.
