With school back in session, the summer season is staring to wind down at Purgatory Resort.

The mountain recently scaled back it operations for its bike park and other activities, but it added seven days to its schedule by continuing to operate on Fridays.

Purgatory will now be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Fridays to Sundays until Oct. 1, weather permitting.

The conditions on the bike trails, however, are still good and several events are still on the mountain’s calendar this season.

“Recent rains have brought cool temps and prime trail conditions to Purgatory’s Bike Park – firm and tacky, but not muddy,” said marketing manager Sara Knight, adding, “Riders should always ride with care by avoiding muddy trails and respecting trail closures.”

Downhill and Enduro mountain bikers will get to rally down the trails on Sept. 9 when the resort hosts Downhill Rockies and the Trail Party Enduro.

Runners can also compete on the trails Sept. 23 during the Mountain Marmot.

“The Mountain Marmot trail race and the Downhill Rockies/Trail Party Enduro bike races have become iconic events that coincide with the changing fall colors,” Knight said. “Athletes from all over are invited to test their mettle against the challenging terrain these races offer. These competitions, more than just races, are a celebration of the season’s beauty, blending the spirit of athleticism with the awe-inspiring palette of nature’s transition.”

Purgatory is also hosting a new Oktoberfest event, presented by Sky Ute Casino from noon to 4:30 p.m. Sept. 16 with music and activities continuing into the evening.

Purgatory is planning on opening for the ski season on Nov. 18. New this winter, Purgatory will use demand-based pricing on its lift tickets and some are currently available staring at $29.
