While the weather this weekend has been poor, next weekend’s weather looks perfect for a Skyhawks fan looking to support the basketball programs.

The Fort Lewis College basketball teams are hosting a golf tournament fundraiser at Hillcrest Golf Club on Saturday, April 26.

“We’re really excited about it,” Skyhawks men’s basketball head coach Jordan Mast said. “We’re still trying to fill about 10 teams and we think it’ll be an exciting event.”

Mast said it’s the first year FLC has done this; the men’s and women’s basketball programs tried to do it in the fall but didn’t have good enough weather.

The festivities will start at 9 a.m. when the putting greens and the driving range open. A putting contest will also happen. Coffee and doughnuts will be available.

Teams will begin play at 10:30 a.m. with a shotgun start. Teams of four are preferred and the tournament will be a scramble format. A Skyhawk player or coach will be at every hole to interact with the golfers.

Prizes for closest to the pin, long drive, first place, second place, third place and last place will be given out. Golf bags will be given out for the prizes and a raffle will occur with prizes from local businesses.

Lunch will be provided by Serious Texas BBQ and each golfer will get two drink tickets for alcohol.

All proceeds will go to the men’s and women’s basketball programs.

“Our goal is to run our program as a top program in the nation,” Mast said. “For us to do that, we feel that we need to continue to raise funds and fund our program like the top teams in the country. Fort Lewis is so supportive and I can't say a bad thing about them, but for us to go above and beyond, we do need to do fundraisers and have successful fundraisers, to allow us to operate, you know, at a really high level, which is what we want to do.”

Mast said the proceeds will go toward things like gear and apparel as well as proteins and supplements for the Skyhawks’ new weight room. Proceeds will also go toward scholarships and assistant coaching salaries.

Singles can register for $150. Foursomes can register for $550. Contact Mast to register at jmast@fortlewis.edu or 503-913-7341. Singles and teams can register anytime before Friday, April 25.
