Slow sales force El Moro Tavern to close

Employee numbers at Peak Food & Beverage go from 300 to 21 in wake of COVID-19 restrictions
Durango Herald file

El Moro Tavern has been temporarily suspended because of slow sales in the wake of COVID-19 restrictions.

Peak Food & Beverage, the parent of restaurants Steamworks Brewing Co., El Moro Tavern and Bird’s, has temporarily closed El Moro Tavern and reduced the number of employees company-wide by 93% in the wake of the COVID-19 outbreak.

“The number of staff at our three establishments has been reduced from 300 to 21,” said PEAK CEO Kris Oyler. “And those remaining will work between Steamworks and Bird’s – an all hands on deck scenario.”

El Moro will be temporarily closed. While the company attempted to deliver food from its front window, El Moro’s sales didn’t prove to be robust enough to justify keeping the restaurant open.

Steamworks will provide take-out to those who order in advance. Steamworks has been allowed temporary parking places on East Second Avenue in front of the brewpub. New regulations also allow for Steamworks to offer curbside delivery of its craft beers in cans, as well as other sealed alcoholic beverages for home consumption.

Bird’s is operating with its the drive-thru, and now with the special alcohol sales designation, the restaurant is also allowed to sell beverages “through the window” – including Steamworks beers and packaged alcohol.

“We hope to rehire all furloughed employees once this health and economic crisis has passed,” Oyler said.
