Stillwater Music wants grownups to get out their boogie shoes this weekend.
The Night Out Dance Party & Fundraiser will take place from 8 p.m. to midnight Saturday at the Powerhouse Science Center, 1333 Camino del Rio. The event will feature live music from three of Stillwater’s adult bands and Robby Overfield & The Breaks, a raffle, appetizers and a bar. Proceeds from the evening will benefit Stillwater Music programs and scholarships.
The party is sponsored by Carver Brewing Co., which donated a keg.
The Night Out party is a departure from Stillwater’s annual events, said Executive Director Jeroen van Tyn.
“It’s the first time we’ve actually had a named event that’s really adult-oriented. Our Party in the Park and Winter Wonderbands have always been kids,” he said. “This one is intended to be a night out: Grab your main squeeze, put on your dancing shoes and come down and boogie to some music by Stillwater’s own.”
Along with an evening of fun, van Tyn said he hopes adults will be inspired to join a Stillwater band. The program offers 12 adult groups, and everyone is welcome, he said.
“We work really hard to find a place for everybody,” he said. “We have bands for everything ranging from people who have never played an instrument before to people who haven’t played in years. Lots of those people come back and really re-energize their musical life through Stillwater.”
Van Tyn said it’s also a place for musicians who can play but are looking for someone to help with the logistics of running a band. “Our instructors are pro musicians and pro band leaders,” he said.
And while Night Out is a fundraiser for Stillwater, it’s also a good reason to get out of the house.
“Come as you are, but be ready to dance and have some fun,” van Tyn said.
