Supporting health and the local food economy at Durango Farmers Market

Durango Farmers Market is a beloved tradition that not only connects locals with fresh, high-quality produce and goods, but also plays an integral role in sustaining the local economy.

This market, which operates every Saturday from May to October, embodies the principles of the circular economy, offering a space for local farmers, artisans and small businesses to thrive while directly benefiting the community. By buying and selling locally, the market fosters economic cycles that help Durango’s economy stay robust and resilient.

This year, Local First has exciting news: Peak Health Alliance is partnering with Local First to sponsor the Durango Farmers Market. This collaboration brings added community support to the market, underscoring the shared goal of promoting both local commerce and healthy living.

Local First, a nonprofit alliance of locally owned independent businesses, has long been a champion of sustainable practices as part of our mission to build an economy that values people, the planet and prosperity for everyone. Peak Health Alliance, the state’s only nonprofit health care purchasing cooperative, works to make health care more affordable and accessible to everyone in Western Colorado. By joining forces, both organizations are helping to ensure the Farmers Market remains a vibrant hub of the local food economy.

“Good health begins with healthy lifestyle choices,” says Rich Cimino, executive director of Peak Health Alliance. “That’s why we’re delighted to support local food producers offering healthy food choices to residents of the communities we serve.”

Durango Farmers Market makes it easy and fun for locals to learn about and purchase fresh, locally sourced foods that promote good health. And the Farmers Market’s participation in the SNAP program makes local produce more affordable for everyone.

In addition to promoting good health, Local First and Peak Health Alliance are committed to fostering the local circular economy, which aims to minimize waste and make the most of local resources. The Farmers Market embodies this model by facilitating direct transactions between local producers and consumers. Each vendor offers goods and services that are grown, created or produced right here in our region, ensuring that money recirculates within the local community. Similarly, Peak Health Alliance takes a locally-minded approach to health care, promoting providers and services close to home at an affordable cost, allowing you to recirculate your savings within our community.

Ultimately, Durango Farmers Market is more than just a place to purchase produce – it’s a community-driven initiative that promotes local economic sustainability, healthy living and the benefits of supporting one another. We couldn’t be more proud to partner with Peak Health Alliance to sponsor this event that, year after year, continues to foster connections that enhance Durango’s economy, health and overall quality of life.

Stop by the Local First and Peak Health Alliance booth every Saturday from May 10 to Oct. 25 and join us in celebrating and supporting our vibrant local community. Here’s to your health!
