You’re not that special
The Fort Lewis College Theatre Department will stage “Avenue Q,” winner of the Tony “Triple Crown” for Best Musical, Best Score and Best Book. Written by Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx, and directed by FLC’s Kathryn Moller, Avenue Q is an “autobiographical and biographical” coming-of-age parable, addressing and satirizing the issues and anxieties associated with entering adulthood. Its characters lament that as children, they were assured by their parents, and by children’s television programs such as PBS’s Sesame Street, that they were “special” and “could do anything,” but as adults, they have discovered to their surprise and dismay that in the real world their options are limited, and they are no more “special” than anyone else. The musical is notable for the use of puppets alongside human actors. (Not suitable for young children.) Retablos y mas
As part of the Durango Arts Center’s ongoing Spanish Colonial Arts: Origins exhibit, there will be a one-day Spanish Colonial Marketplace from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday in the Barbara Conrad Gallery. Marketplace items will feature colcha (blanket) embroidery by Santa Fe artist Julie Gomez, traditional Rio Grande weavings by master weaver Sophia DeYapp, straw applique and retablo carving and paintings by Krissa Lopez and carved painted bultos by artist Joseph Lopez. Get funky
Funk and world beat favorites Euforquestra return to Durango on Saturday in support of its new album, “Fire.” Eufórquestra’s music is igniting dance floors across the country, with a sound that “explodes, dances and melts in your ear with sheer bliss” writes Chris M. Slawecki on AllAboutJazz.com. The Fort Collins-based band will take the stage at 10 p.m. at Animas City Theatre, 128 E. College Drive, 799-2281, www.animascitytheatre.com.
A last look
This weekend is the final for the community-oriented photography exhibit “The Backyard” at Open Shutter Gallery. All 34 photos are by local photographers, who shot with the theme of “backyards.” “A lot of people live where the landscape is just breathtaking,” gallery employee Charlene Geiss said. The show closes Thursday. Gallery hours are 10 a.m.-6p.m. Monday-Saturday and 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday, 735 Main Ave., 382-8355.
