Expect a typical August week of scattered showers and thunderstorms, possible high winds and sunny mornings, according to the National Weather Service in Grand Junction.

According to National Weather Service meteorologist Tom Renwick, monsoons are expected to stay clear of Southwest Colorado for the majority of this week, but that doesn’t mean it’ll be all clear skies.

“There’s just so much moisture in the atmosphere it’s just going to hang around,” Renwick said.

On Monday, there’s a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 10 a.m., which will continue into the evening. Highs during the day will linger around 80 degrees.

Tuesday through Thursday, while there is the chance of rain and thunderstorms in the high country around the San Juan Mountains, which could push down into the lower valleys, it should remain relatively dry, Renwick said.

“There’s a high pressure system moving in that should push those storms further north,” he said. “But there’s always a chance it could come down into the valley.”

But Friday through the weekend, Renwick said the monsoons are expected to return to Southwest Colorado, which could bring heavy rainfall and powerful storms.

“Typical August weather,” Renwick said. “Nothing out of the ordinary.”

Highs throughout the week should remain in the low to mid-80s.
