USA Today featuring Durango

The Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad and Animas River are a couple of the attractions that put Durango in the running for USA Today’s readers choice award for Best Destination for Outdoor Enthusiasts.

Despite the recent closure of the Animas River, Durango is once again in the running for one of the top destinations in the country.

Our town is competing against some big names, such as Austin, Portland and Lake Tahoe, in the USA Today’s readers choice award for Best Destination for Outdoor Enthusiasts.

Voting is open until Sept. 14, and USA Today invites everyone to vote once a day. It’s a perfect chance to vote early and often to revive Durango’s national image.

Even though media outlets across the country have published photos of toxic mine waste in the river, Durango is currently fourth out of 20 on the leaderboard.

USA Today highlighted the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, the Colorado Trail and the Animas River as top attractions.

Southwest destinations have proved popular so far in the contest. Tahoe, Santa Fe and Moab were also in the top 10 on Wednesday.

Vote online at www.10best.com/awards/travel/.
