Obama administration proposes health fixes

WASHINGTON– In one of its last chances to tinker with President Obama’s signature health care law, the administration on Monday proposed a series of fixes and adjustments for 2018, when the White House will have a new occupant.

The changes are detailed in a highly technical draft regulation, nearly 300 pages long. Insurers and consumer advocates were trying to decipher its implications Monday evening.

The proposal would update the plan’s premium stabilization system to reflect concerns that insurers have raised. It also proposes changes to a current five-year ban on companies returning to the health law’s markets after they have left. Some big name carriers have dramatically scaled back for 2017. And many consumers face hefty premium increases.

Pennsylvania

EpiPens to come in generic version

CANONSBURG, Penn. – The maker of EpiPens will start selling a cheaper, generic version of the emergency allergy shots as the furor over repeated U.S. price hikes continues – and looming competition threatens its near-monopoly.

Despite its second move in five days to make EpiPens more affordable for consumers, maker Mylan N.V. still faces condemnation from critics who accused it of price-gouging. They note Mylan hasn’t explained why it hiked the price more than 500 percent from $94 after acquiring the product in 2007.

Executives with Mylan, which mainly sells generic medicines, said Monday the firm will begin selling its generic version for $300 for a pair of EpiPens, in doses for adults or children, like the current EpiPens. That will still bring Mylan tens of millions of dollars while helping it retain market share against current and future brand-name and generic competition.

North Carolina

Two tropical systems bear down on state

RODANTHE, N.C. – Beachgoers, boat captains and business owners on North Carolina's Outer Banks warily eyed a potent tropical weather system Monday that could rain out one of the last busy weeks of the summer.

The first system was expected by forecasters to become a tropical storm before brushing the North Carolina coast Tuesday, bringing heavy rain and high winds to barrier islands popular for serene beaches.

Another tropical depression in the Gulf of Mexico could hit northern Florida later in the week and possibly head toward the Atlantic Coast.

Mexico

Execution claims oust Mexico’s top officer

MEXICO CITY – Mexico’s president dismissed the chief of the federal police force Monday, less than two weeks after the country's human rights commission released a scathing report alleging federal police executed at least 22 suspected drug cartel members during a raid on a ranch.

Interior Secretary Miguel Angel Osorio Chong said President Enrique Pena Nieto decided to remove Enrique Galindo to allow for a transparent investigation.
